ESPN/ABC Continues with Average NBA Finals Ratings-  The overnight ratings for game five of the NBA Finals are in at 11.4, down from last year’s 12.6 rating for game five between the Heat and Thunder.  Game 5 scored a 37.6 metered market rating in San Antonio and a 28.8 in Miami.

Stanley Cup Finals Game Two Most Watched NHL Game in History of NBCSN-  NBC reported today that game two of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals was the most-watched NHL game in the history of the NBC Sports Network.  The game garnered a 2.0 household rating and 3.964 million viewers, the second most watched sporting event on the network, behind the U.S. Women’s Olympic final in 2012

Bengals Return to HBO’s Hard Knocks- HBO Sports announced today that the Cincinnati Bengals will be the subject of this season’s behind the scenes access at training camp for the network’s Hard Knocks series.  The Bengals were featured on the show back in 2009. Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Cincinnati Bengals debuts on HBO August 6th at 10:00p.m. ET.

Pioli to join the Set of Football Night in America-  NBC Sports announced today that it has hired former Patriots and Chiefs executive Scott Pioli to serve as an analyst for its Sunday Football Night in America. Pioli will also appear regularly on Pro Football Talk, NBC Sports Network’s daily NFL program hosted by ProFootballTalk.com founder and NFL Insider Mike Florio.

Sports Media Weekly No. 153- Paulsen, Sports Media Watch

We have an abbreviated edition of Sports Media Weekly this week.

Ken Fang of Fang’s Bites and I are joined this week by Paulsen of Sports Media Watch.

We start the show looking at the average ratings for ABC and ESPN through the first three games of the NBA Finals.  We then look at the expectations of the NHL and NBC as the NHL Finals between the Bruins and Blackhawks gets underway tonight.

The next round of job cuts at ESPN began today.  Among those let go was Howie Schwab, long time ESPN researcher and former participant in the Stump the Schwab program which ran from 2004 through 2006.  We react to the move, which appears to be having an impact on those still in Bristol.

We move on to the announcement that ESPN will be shuttering its ESPN3D channel by the end of the year.

We wrap the show looking at how the U.S. Open golf tournament will fare for ESPN and NBC.

NBC Sports Coverage of the Belmont

NBC is scheduled to produce six hours of coverage around this weekend’s Belmont Stakes.

Bob Costas and Tom Hammond will anchor the caverage on race day  Analysis will come from Jerry Bailey, Randy Moss, handicappers Mike Battaglia and Bob Neumeier; host Laffit Pincay, III; reporters Kenny Rice, Donna Brothers and Jay Privman; race caller Larry Collmus, a Baltimore native; and Michelle Beadle, who will contribute features and handle interviews.

NBC Sports Group’s Coverage of the U.S. Open Golf Tournament

NBC Sports begins comprehensive coverage of the U.S. Open Golf Tournament next week.  Through its various platforms NBC plans a combined 110 hours of coverage.

NBC will provide 17 hours of live tournament coverage Thursday through Sunday.  Bob Costas will host the network’s coverage while Dan Hicks and Johnny Miller hand the lead play-by-play and analysts role from the 18th green.  Tower reporters include Gary Koch and Peter Jacobsen; on-course reporters are Roger Maltbie, Mark Rolfing and Notah Begay. Steve Sands will handle player interviews; and Jimmy Roberts will offer special reports.
