Sports Media Weekly Podcast No. 97- Ken Schott, Schenectady Gazette

SMWeekly97

Ken Fang of Fang’s Bites and I have quite a bit on our plate on this week’s edition of the Sports Media Weekly Podcast.

We start off by looking at the coverage by CBS and Turner Sports of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.  Both Ken and I are impressed by how the networks have handled the tournament in its second year of sharing coverage.

We then talk about how recent NFL headlines (Saint suspensions, Peyton Manning, Tim Tebow) have been handled by the sports media.

We touch upon the nominations for the 33rd Annual Sports Emmy Awards and what the judges were thinking with some of the nominations (Skip Bayless?)

We wrap up our news segment by looking at the new partnership between Fox and the MLB Network (MLBN) where MLBN will be producing Fox’s Saturday pre-game baseball show, how NASCAR fans who subscribe to SiriusXM Radio can now follow the action online, and the childish behavior of one Bob Knight.

Our guest this week is Ken Schott, sports writer for the Schenectady Gazette.  Ken covers college hockey and tells us how the paper plans to cover #1 seed Union College in the tournament.  We talk about how college hockey is covered (or not) by the networks and the penetration of sports media in New York’s Capital Region.

Sports Media Weekly Podcast No. 96

SMWeekly96

Ken Fang of Fang’s Bites and I take it easy on this week’s edition of the Sports Media Weekly Podcast.

We have no guest this week, allowing all of you to focus on watching the NCAA Basketball Tournament.

Speaking of the Big Dance, Ken and I lead-off the show by discussing the early ratings numbers for truTV for the First Four Games in Dayton.  We also look back at how CBS, Turner, and ESPN handled coverage of the unveiling of the 68 team field Sunday Night.

We then shift gears and talk about a report in Sports Business Journal on the possible extension of the television deal between ESPN and the Big 12 Network.

We wrap up the show by predicitng whether ESPN will be able to re-sign three of its higher profile talent, Erin Andrews, Michelle Beadle, and Scott Van Pelt.  The contracts of all three expire soon.

Sports Media Weekly Podcast No. 95- Chad Finn, The Boston Globe

SMWeekly95

It’s a three man show on this week’s edition of the Sports Media Weekly Podcast.

Ken Fang of Fang’s Bites and I are joined for this show by Chad Finn, Sports Media Columnist for the Boston Globe. Over the course of the show we discuss the release of Peyton Manning by the Colts and the anticipated media frenzy in speculating where he will be playing football next season.  We all agree it is likely ESPN will be following the story in a way similar to when it covered Brett Favre’s multiple returns to the league.

We then spend some time talking college basketball on the eve of the NCAA Tournament.  We look at ESPN’s handling of Championship Week and the plans by CBS and Turner Sports to cover March Madness.

We then talk of the Boston sports media scene with Chad, specifically news made today by local sports talker WEEI.  We also touch upon the upcoming retirement of the Globe’s Bob Ryan and why Boston sports media beat is a fascinating one to cover.

Sports Media Weekly Podcast No. 94- Frank Shorr, Boston University

SMWeekly94

This week’s podcast is so good, it happens only once every four years…

Ken Fang of Fang’s Bites and I open up the show looking at the work of Fox Sports during its coverage of the Daytona 500.  Despite multiple delays both Ken and I were pleased with the job done by Fox.

We also talk about plans by the NFL to kick-off the 2012 season a day earlier to accommodate President Obama as he accepts the Democratic nomination in early September.

We wrap up our news segment by exploring the dwindling coverage of hockey on ESPN and the slow start to the newly branded NBC Sports Network.

Our guest this week is Frank Shorr, professor of Broadcast Sports and Sports Journalism at Boston University.  Frank also worked as an Executive Producer in sports at WHDH TV in Boston.  Frank discusses the ever shrinking time allotted to some local television sportscasts, how it needs to evolve, and how he is teaching students to succeed in sports television today.  Frank also talks about his role as the Director of the Sports Institute, a summer  program for aspiring sports journalists.

Sports Media Weekly Podcast No. 93- John Daly, The Daly Planet

SMWeekly93

There is a lot on our plate during this week’s edition of the Sports Media Weekly Podcast.

Ken Fang of Fang’s Bites and I start the show talking about the inappropriate headline that appeared on ESPN’s mobile site over the weekend in connection with Knicks guard Jeremy Lin.  Ken has a personal connection to the story while I try to focus on the excessive sensitivity to racial speech in our current culture.

We then follow-up on the ratings bonanza the Lin story has provided the the NBA media, specifically MSG in New York, which magically settled its carriage dispute with Time Warner Cable.

We also follow-up on the impact watching the NCAA Men’s College Basketball Tournament online may have for some folks.  We talk about the announcer pairings for the tournament and we wrap up our news segment looking back at the announcement that Ron Jaworski will not longer be in the Monday Night Football booth beginning next season.

With the Daytona 500 this weekend we decided to invite John Daly of The Daly Planet back to the show to talk about the beginning of the NASCAR season.  John talks about how Fox, TNT, and ESPN plan to cover the races this year and its impact on bidding for the next television contract, which may take place later this year.
