Berman Re-Signs with ESPN

There was talk of this a few weeks ago.  Today it’s official…

From ESPN PR:

Six-time National Sportscaster of the Year Chris Berman, who joined ESPN in October 1979 – less than a month after the network launched – has signed an extension to remain with ESPN. One of the preeminent sports commentators of his generation, Berman will continue as the leading voice and face of ESPN’s National Football League studio coverage as host of Sunday NFL Countdown, Monday Night Countdown and Monday Night Football halftime, and NFL highlight segments on SportsCenter. He will also continue his play-by-play duties for the Major League Baseball Home Run Derby and his familiar host role for ESPN’s U.S. Open golf coverage, among other responsibilities.
Berman’s extension ensures that he will remain a fixture on ESPN’s NFL Sundays. His 25 years as host of Sunday NFL Countdown (formerly NFL Gameday) – which pre-dates ESPN’s first NFL television contract – is by far the longest streak ever among all weekly pro football studio show hosts. Berman is also a fan favorite for his signature calls on NFL highlights, for which he earned widespread acclaim as host of the classic NFL PrimeTime from 1987-2005.
“Chris has contributed so much to our company’s success in reaching sports fans for more than three decades, and we are thrilled that one of the most important figures in our history will remain a vital part of ESPN’s future,” said ESPN President George Bodenheimer.‪‪
Added ESPN Executive Vice President, Content John Skipper:‪‪ “Chris will continue to be the face and voice of ESPN, delivering sports news, expert storytelling and, of course, his signature highlights with the same passion, energy and enthusiasm that has resonated with fans since he first arrived in Bristol in 1979.”
Said Berman: “Home is where the heart is, and I am thrilled to be staying home at ESPN for years to come. It’s been a privilege to work alongside my colleagues and an honor to be welcomed into the homes of sports fans for over 30 years. In fact, since this all began in 1979, that means we’ve been together for parts of five decades. I can’t wait to continue the journey.”
This week Berman will also occupy his familiar host position on ESPN’s main set at the 2010 NFL Draft – Thursday, April 22 (7:30-11 p.m. ET) and Friday, April 23 (6-10:30 p.m., ESPN/ESPN2). Berman has covered the Draft for 30 years and hosted ESPN’s annual telecast since 1987.

Sports Media Weekly Podcast #30- Victor Rojas, Yakcy

Sports Media Weekly Welcome to the 30th edition of the Sports Media Weekly Podcast.

Ken Fang of Fang’s Bites and I delve into CBS’ coverage of the Masters and the improved, but not record ratings for the telecast.  Ken also relates his experience of seeing a 3D presentation of the tournament sponsored by Comcast and Cox Communications.

Ken and I also provide a preview of how the ratings may fare for the upcoming NHL Playoffs and we discuss our disdain for local sports talk radio in the Boston market.

Our guest this week is Victor Rojas, play-by-play voice for the Anaheim Angels.  Victor joined us earlier this year to discuss his role at the MLB Network.  Today he talks about taking over the Angels’ job under not-so-perfect circumstances.  He also tells us about Yakcy, a social media enterprise where fans can congregate to discuss games featuring their favorite teams…

CBS Sees Higher, But Not Record, Masters Ratings

From CBS PR:

CBS Sports’ final-round coverage of the 2010 Masters on Sunday, April 11, which saw Phil Mickelson win his third Green Jacket, earned its highest rating in nine years with an average overnight household rating/share of 12.0/25, up 36% from last year’s final-round coverage (8.8/21; Angel Cabrera’s win in a two-hole playoff). This year’s final-round coverage is the third highest-rated final round of any golf tournament since at least 1986 in the metered markets (as far back as recorded CBS Nielsen data).

The highest-rated final round of a tournament was the 1997 Masters with a 15.8/32 when Tiger Woods won his first Green Jacket. The second highest-rated final round also was the Masters in 2001 when Woods won his second Green Jacket earning a rating/share of 12.9/27 in the metered markets.

This year’s final round rating peaked at 14.7/28 from 6:30-7:00 PM, ET.

Sports Media Weekly Podcast #29- Tom Mee, Jr., Fox Sports Midwest

Sports Media Weekly After a week away to deal with the fierce weather in the Northeast, Ken Fang of Fang’s Bites and I are back for the Sports Media Weekly Podcast.

First on the docket, the Tiger Woods press conference earlier this week from the Masters.  Both Ken and I feel Tiger handled himself better this time around.

We also look at how CBS handled it’s coverage of the Final Four, and the huge ratings numbers that followed Duke’s win over Butler.  We wrap the news portion of the show by welcoming the 2010 baseball season.

The advent of the baseball season leads into our guest this week.  Tom Mee, Jr directs Cardinals baseball for Fox Sports Midwest.  He recently published a book called Cutting The Game, where he describes how he has handled Cardinals telecasts over his 23 year television career.
