Sports Media Musings- January 13, 2009

Here are some sports media news items from the last few days that I find intriguing…

The biggest sports media news story of the day, in my opinion, is the news that the Dallas Morning News and the Fort Worth Star Telegram, competitors in the Metroplex, will be sharing sports reporting resources.  Under normal circumstances, this news would be unheard of.  Because of the obstacles facing these papers, it is huge news…and a realization that possibly Dallas will become a one paper town?  That’s too bad.  Why aren’t more people talking about this?  Is the possible demise of print that predictable that these stories are no longer a big deal?

Another example of some getting their undies in a bunch for no reason…the news that Billy Packer and Bobby Knight will host a televised college basketball show during the NCAA Tournament from the Wynn sports book in Las Vegas.  The pair say hey will not be talking betting odds during their program.  Until proven otherwise, why not take them at their word?  Neither one of these guys are going to jeopardize their future or their reputations by doing something so stupid.

Others on the web have also been bothered by the list of the Top 50 Sportscasters put together by the American Sportscasters Association.  The only response I have is…after the top 20 names (all pretty solid in my opinion) who really cares about the rest?

It’s nice to see that the sports media north of the border also spend plenty of time on wasted endeavors…

I always find it interesting that people get all excited about finding out who DID NOT vote for a certain Hall of Famer.  If I was the player, I could care less…

Last summer I wrote that the Washington Nationals’ television ratings were at a level barely measurable.  Well MASN has decided to share the Nationals with an over-the air station for the near future.  Seems like a good move to me…The numbers can’t get any worse.
