Sports Media Musings- January 5th, 2009

Here is today’s look at news in the sports media world…along with some commentary…

It looks like the prescient sports bloggers are getting their undies in a bunch again over the latest hiring of Jay Mariotti by AOL Sports. As I mentioned in the linked post…yeah, Mariotti has an ego the size of North Dakota, but so do many others in the media. He loves the fact that you guys are talking about him.  The best thing to do is stop being an enabler.

One of the largest sports radio stations in the country has locked up one of their stars to a long term contract. WEEI inked afternoon drive host Glenn Ordway to a five year deal worth $1 mil per. Living in southern New England I listen to WEEI daily. Ordway is a good talent, as long as he stays away from the schtick…which, unfortunately, is not often enough.

In other radio news, the Bay Area will be looking forward to some PBP changes.

The Sports Business Journal really needs to provide its content free for those who are not priviledged to get their pres releases each week. This week SBJ is focusing on college sports media. Included is a piece on the big bucks some media entities are paying in rights fees; how regional sports networks look to improve their collegiate coverage; how Raycom seeks to regain its significance; and some people to watch in college sports in 2009.

John Orand at SBJ predicts what sports media will deliver in 2009.

Oh…and the WWL has a new online look.
