Super Bowl XLIII- Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Arizona Cardinals

Here is our preview of this weekend’s Super Bowl, through the work of the local media covering each team…

PITTSBURGH STEELERS

Let’s take a look at the local media contingent that spend their time covering the Pittsburgh Steelers

Newspaper- The City of Pittsburgh are served by the Pittsburgh Post Gazette and the Pittsburgh Tribune Review.

The Post Gazette has a very detailed online sports section with a page dedicated to the Steelers. Online Sports Editor Dan Gigler is the author of the Blog N’ Gold Steelers blog.

The Tribune Review also presents a respectable sports section. They also have a dedicated section for the club. Beat writer Scott Brown also maintains the paper’s Steelers’ blog.

Sports Radio- WDVE and WBGG serve as the flagship for the Steelers’ Radio Network. Bill Hillgrove serves on play-by-play while Tunch Ilkin provides analysis. WBGG and WEAE serve as the sports radio talkers in town.

Television- Follow the Steelers on television at KDKA, WPGH, WPXI, and WTAE.

Blogs- Among the blogs covering the Steelers include Behind the Steel Curtain, Steelers Locker, Steelers Gab, and the Steelers Tradition.

ARIZONA CARDINALS

Let’s head to the southwest and examine the local media group that covers the Arizona Cardinals

Newspaper- The Arizona Republic is the largest newspaper in the region. It’s online newspaper looks like Web-Alpha, really disappointing. Its sports section is the same, no personality. The paper is part of AZCentral.com, which does do a good job using newspaper content on its sports section. They have special content dedicated to the Cardinals. Beat writer Kent Sommers does maintain his own blog for the paper.

Sports Radio- KTAR-AM & FM serve as the flagship in the Cardinals Radio Network. Dave Pasch returns on play-by-play, along with Rob Wolfley on commentary. KTAR and KGME are also places to talk Cardinals football.

Television- KNXV, KPHO, KPNX, and KSAZ are the television outlets in Phoenix that follow the Cardinals.

Blogs- For independent blog coverage, check out The Cardinals Report, Raising Zona, AZ Sports Hub, and Cardinals Locker.

Sports Media Musings- January 29th, 2009

A quick look at a few sports media items making news today.  But first…

Is it me, or is there literally zero buzz coming out of Tampa four days before the Super Bowl?

From ESPN comes word that the WWL has been named TV programmer of the year at the New York Festivals Awards.  Congrats.

Also from Bristol comes a preview of a story in this weekend’s Outside the Lines about the first NFL team to use steroids.   Why isn’t this show in prime time?

The weekly newspaper in Boston, The Phoenix, has a plan to save its daily competitor, the Boston Globe.  Most of their ideas are good ones.

That’s it…short but sweet.

Sports Media Musings- January 28, 2009

I have been extremely behind on commenting on some of the stories I’ve been reading, so now it’s catch-up time.  First, the freshest stuff…

In our effort to follow the latest in the downsizing of the newspaper industry comes this piece from the American Journalism Review.  It takes a look at how some of the reporters who have been laid off have fared in getting back into the job market.  Good read.

Editor & Publisher reports that the number of media credential requests for the Super Bowl were down this year and, logically, the number of credentials issued was also down.  All I have to say is…don’t blame me.

A couple of quick notes from last week that may have fallen through the cracks…

The once mighty Hartford Courant will no longer be staffing the major sports teams in Boston or New York. (Thanks again to E&P).  Read the whole piece. here is actually some good news from New Hampshire.

Those of you aspiring to get into this crazy industry may have some options soon courtesy of TCU.  Their first assignment…getting the scoop on which body part will fail on alum LaDainian Tomlinson in 2009.
