Another Reason Why the NFL Has No Sense of Humor

To stray a moment into the fringe levels of sports media…I was alerted to this article from the Cleveland Plain Dealer featuring the men who have served as P.A. announcers at Cleveland Browns’ games.
At most arenas the P.A. announcer can help the local crowd get into the game. But not in the NFL. From the article:
League rules are simple: Inform fans about penalties, injuries, tackles, yardage gained and touchdowns. Beyond that…
“They cannot inappropriately lead cheers,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello wrote in an email. And any sound that the home team controls — P.A. announcer included — must end when the play clock is running and the visiting team has the ball.
Heaven forbid we let the P.A. guys show any emotion. I wonder how many people in the NFL office spent their time on this regulation? What a waste.
