SI Looks To Do It Right

March 19, 2008 | by Keith | Categories Internet, Magazines |

I’ve never had a problem with the idea that print publications should charge for some of its content to be viewed online. But I never understood why some news organizations charge at all for information in their back issues. Isn’t the goal to make money off the fresh stuff?

Anyway, Sports Illustrated is about to buck that trend. According to this article in the NY Times, beginning tomorrow SI will be opening up it’s entire collection of issues to be viewed online for free.

The Vault, as it will be called, will include access to articles and photos from the magazine’s 53 year history…all through a searchable database.

If you’re like me, a long time print subscriber of the mag, I’m sure you’ll be spending way too much time looking through those back issues. Darn you SI! But thank you!
