The Beat Writer in the NBA

February 28, 2008 | by Keith | Categories Internet, Newspapers |

Thanks to Fanhouse to tipping me off to this.

Ross Siler of the Salt Lake Tribune is one of the beat writers for the Utah Jazz.  On his blog (which he shares with Steve Luhm), he is documenting the behind-the-scenes events of covering the team.  It’s a great read if you want to know what it’s like to be a beat writer.

In his Monday piece, Siler discusses his meeting with Jazz players and coaches early morning before the team heads on the road for its first stop in Minnesota.  He goes through the process of developing a story on an off day and a little about what is expected at the paper.  He also addresses how his travel schedule is much different than that of the teams’.

His Tuesday post begins with press access at a team shoot-around.  He describes his pre-game activities prior to the T-Wolves game and his work post-game in filing his story back home.   He also details his late night travails.

The entry from Wednesday starts with Siler’s un-Godly travel schedule from Minnesota back to Salt Lake City.  He gets into the specifics of his day in talking with members of the Jazz’ D-League team before settling in for that night’s game against the Pistons.  He quickly mentions his disdain with a fan near his press seat (I would have loved to see how that was handled) before recapping a great come-from-behind win for the Jazz.

All in all, good stuff about what it’s like to be a reporter in the trenches.  I will add more as Siler progresses through the rest of his four game in five day journal.

“A Mind is a terrible thing to Waste”

“The hatred the NBA reporters appear to be giving to Mr. Kobe Bryant is a live Coal in their Hearts-It is far more damaging to them than the Greatest NBA Player of this era.”

“A great many NBA Writers or beat writers(or whatever they call themselves that votes for the MVP each year think thry are THINKING WHEN THEY ARE REALLY REARRANGING THEIR PREJUDICES.”

I am old, Poor, sick, and trying to die with some peace of mind in all phases of my life.

For the past five years-especially the last three years, it has puzzled me as to why Mr. Kobe Bryant has not won the MVP award? I was told it was not the fans voting. It was some writers.

Mr. Bryant appear to have been framed to destroy his spotless record for so many years of good reports-intellectual reports that was different from any other player but no writer actually wrote that.

Writers of this era, choose partiality, my type of player, or some other prejudicial format to not give Mr. Bryant his rightful award. It appear that Each writer will do that again this year. That is so sad and ignorant.

In past eras, it was just the best player. the player that was both offensive and defensive. The one that excelled more than any other!!

In this era, evidently, there are writers that have friends or associates that have played with or on other teams that Mr. Bryant have achieved over them; therefore, you feel that your power to vote give you the right to deny him his rightful award.

That is just fine because before God, I believe has given him the victory because every time you do not vote correctly fans all over the world is asking why?

Injustices have been stopped in the past and this era will be no different.

your power to vote must be stopped and the MVP of the NBA must be chosen by others that have nothing to lose or gain. The vote must become fair and impartial!!
