In our continuing effort to provide previews of some of the 2007 college football bowl games as seen through the eyes of the local media covering the teams, we bring you a preview of the New Mexico Bowl featuring the University of Nevada and the University of New Mexico…
University of Nevada (6-6)
The Wolfpack had a disappointing 2007 and became bowl eligible by winning its final game of the regular season. The University’s Athletic website has comprehensive coverage and statistics of the 2007 football season. The student run Nevada Sagebrush newspaper has campus coverage of the team. KUNR radio is located on the Nevada campus and even though it is a public radio station, there may be a hint of Wolfpack talk.
The Reno Gazette-Journal is the newspaper of record that covers the Wolfpack. The sports section features news on the game as well as a special section dedicated to all Wolfpack sports. The Gazette-Journal also has a blog dedicated to the Wolfpack.
Sports radio in Reno is lacking to say the least. KPLY is listed as the ESPN sports radio outlet, but the station does not appear to have a website. Any of you in Reno know if the team is being discussed on the air? Let us know in the comments.
Expect Reno Television to have a presence at the game. For more, see KTVN, KRNV, KOLO, and KRXI.
Other than the Gazette-Journal blog, there does not appear to be any other Wolfpack fan sites on the web. If I am wrong, again, please share it through your comments.
University of New Mexico (8-4)
Talk about home field advantage…the Lobos have the luxury of playing before the home crowd today. You can get the latest from the club itself on the Athletic Department website. The New Mexico Daily Lobo has student coverage of the game. Like Nevada, there is only public radio station KUNM located on campus.
Albuquerque is actually served by two newspapers. The Albuquerque Journal serves as the morning paper in the region. Their sports section is not flashy but does cover the events surrounding Lobo sports. The Albuquerque Tribune is the afternoon paper. Its sports section is easier on the eye and seems to provide better comprehensive coverage of the team. There even appears to be team blogs on the site, but they haven’t been updated in some time.
KNML is the lone sports radio station in Albuquerque. It has comprehensive coverage of the game, although the radio broadcast can be heard on KKOB.
Local television in Albuquerque may also dabble in covering the game. Check out KOB, KRQE, KOAT, and KASA for more.
Alright then! Let the Battle of the Wolves begin!
